Former German President Roman Herzog dies at 82

Roman Herzog, a former German president who apologised to Poland for the suffering Germany caused the country during WWII, died on Tuesday at the age of 82.

Herzog, who served as president of Germany between 1994 and 1999, issued the extraordinary apology in 1994 during commemorations marking the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.
“Today, I bow down before the fighters of the Warsaw Uprising as before all Polish victims of the war,” Herzog said at the time.
“I ask for forgiveness for what has been done to you by Germans.” (rg)
