Germany has to decide what kind of relations it wants to have with Poland, the leader of Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party has said ahead of the German Chancellor’s visit to Warsaw.

A spokeswoman for PiS confirmed on Sunday that Merkel has accepted Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło’s invitation to come to Warsaw for talks, which some sources have said will take place on 7 February.

If given the opportunity to speak with Chancellor Angela Merkel, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński said he will tell her “that Germany needs to decide on the nature of its relations with Poland”.

“You cannot drag Poland’s name through muck and at the same time expect relations to be good,” Kaczyński said.

The PiS leader said Poland has been attacked in German media, for which Merkel is partly responsible. He said claims that Berlin does not hold influence over its media are “fairy tales”.

Talks between the countries’ leaders are expected to focus on Polish-German relations and the future of the European Union, particularly in light of Britain’s impending exit from the bloc.

“Germany would like the conditions of Britain’s exit to distance it from the EU,” PiS head Kaczyński said, adding: “We want Great Britain to remain as close as possible to the EU, and maybe to … return”.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters on Monday that Berlin wants to "not only maintain but also strengthen the very good and close relations with Poland which have crystallized in recent years and which, because of our common past, are by no means a given."
