Warsaw supports the peace process in the Middle East, Polish President Andrzej Duda said during a meeting with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem on Tuesday.

The Polish and Israeli presidents talked mainly about the two countries' common history and present cooperation.

They said that both nations have developed a close relationship over recent years.

“Poland above all supports Israel, but on the other hand also strongly supports a very strong peace process in the Middle East,” Duda said.

“We deeply care that in this very important part of the world where relationships are often difficult, that they develop while respecting mutual relations, but also taking into account each other's needs, and therefore through conversation and dialogue,” Duda said at a joint press conference with Rivlin on Tuesday.

During his official visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories, Duda will also meet his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, the Polish president's aide Krzysztof Szczerski said.

Duda will also hold a “long” talk with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss peace in the Middle East and Polish-Israeli relations, Szczerski said. (rg/pk)
