The rights of EU citizens already living in the UK – which includes up to one million Poles – would be guaranteed as early as possible, British Prime Minister Theresa May said in a Tuesday speech on the country’s impending divorce from the bloc.

May also said that the UK “cannot be half in and half out” of the EU, dismissing suggestions that Britain could remain a “partial” member.

But May said Britain would continue to welcome the “brightest and the best” migrants, adding: “We will ensure we can control immigration to Britain from Europe”.

“While controlled immigration can bring great benefits … when the numbers get too high, public support for the system falters,” she said.

It is estimated that up to one million Poles live in Britain, the majority of whom emigrated there after Poland joined the European Union in 2004. The Polish community comprises the largest migrant population of EU nationals based in Britain. (vb/pk)
