Ryszard Czarnecki, a member of the European Parliament from the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which governs in Poland, received 328 votes.

He compared his result to the 2012 election with 204 votes for Jacek Protasiewicz, an MEP from Poland’s then-governing Civic Platform (PO) party. Czarnecki said “this is the best proof that, after a positive change, Poland has a strong international position.”

A “positive change” was PiS's 2015 election motto.

Poland’s other vice-president in the European Parliament is Bogusław Liberadzki from the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), who received 378 votes. (vb/pk)
