Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymański said that while the subject will likely be discussed during meetings with local officials, the Polish government has not definitively ruled out support for Tusk’s bid.

Tusk, a former prime minister of Poland, assumed the post in 2014. He founded the Civic Platform (PO) party now in opposition.

Last week, Polish Radio reported that Merkel will voice support for Tusk to continue as President of the European Council for a second term.

Jarosław Kaczyński, head of Poland's governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, has said that the government in Warsaw will likely not back Donald Tusk for a second term as president of the European Council.

“I would imagine that the government will not support the bid for Donald Tusk's second term,” Kaczyński said last December.

On Monday, Szymański said that the government has not ruled out support for Tusk, in spite of the comments by the party leader.

“However it is obvious that, given the long years Tusk spent in Polish politics, [PiS] as having a majority in the Polish parliament, has its own opinions and experiences [on the issue],” he told Polish Radio.

Merkel will visit Poland on Tuesday. She will meet Prime Minister Beata Szydło, President Andrzej Duda, and PiS leader Kaczyński.
