The boy, aged three-and-a-half months, was hospitalised on Sunday night with life-threatening injuries.

Doctors said he had a broken cranium, fractures to the ribs and multiple bruises. Medical staff suspected that the child had been abused for a long time, and notified police.

Police arrested the 30-year-old father of the child and the infant’s 26-year-old mother some time later. Both are Polish nationals.

A spokesman for the prosecutor's office in St. Polten, north-east Austria, said that according to preliminary information, the cause of death was brain trauma. (rg/pk)
