The two ministers also discussed the priorities of Malta’s turn at the six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council and the European Neighbourhood Policy, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

“In the face of serious challenges it is imperative to have close cooperation [by] European countries in strengthening the security of our continent,” the ministry quoted Waszczykowski as saying during the talks.

The ministers also focused on the situation in Ukraine as well as in Libya and Syria, according to the Polish ministry. They discussed bilateral issues including the development of economic cooperation.

During his visit, Waszczykowski also met Malta’s President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs Louis Grech, the Polish foreign ministry said.

While in Malta, Waszczykowski laid a wreath at a plaque commemorating sailors from a Polish navy ship that sank off the coast of Malta during World War II, the ministry added. (str/pk)
