It is estimated that up to one million Poles live in Britain, the majority of whom emigrated there after Poland joined the European Union in 2004. The Polish community comprises the largest migrant population of EU nationals based in Britain.

The Telegraph on Monday reported that May is expected to announce that citizens from European Union countries will not automatically be able to remain in the UK permanently after the UK triggers Article 50.

The new migrants will “be subject to migration curbs after Britain leaves the European Union, which could include a new visa regime and restricted access to benefits,” the daily said.

The Telegraph added that next month May is “expected to say that EU migrants who arrived in the UK before the ‘cut-off date’ will have their rights protected as long British citizens living elsewhere in Europe are granted the same assurance.”

The UK voted to leave the European Union in a referendum in June 2016.

Theresa May is expected to invoke Article 50 of the European Union treaty to exit the bloc in March.
