“It is very likely that Russia is seeking to annex the Donbass region,” Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said on Wednesday during a trip to Kyiv.

He said he would continue talks on the issue with his Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Klimkin during a future meeting in Warsaw.

During a press briefing summarising his visit to Ukraine, Waszczykowski said the situation in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine is becoming “ever more difficult”, because “the Russians do not respect the Minsk Protocol”.

“There is a great probability that following Crimea, they want to annex Donbass as well,” he said, adding that Russia is “issuing identity cards, passports, seizing Ukrainian property, cutting off Donbass from [the rest of] Ukraine, so it is very dangerous.”

Fighting has been ongoing in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donbass region, since April 2014.

Waszczykowski was in Ukraine on Wednesday on a joint visit with his British counterpart Boris Johnson. (rg)
