Visegrad Group countries see the future EU as a strong community based on cooperation between nation states, the Speaker of the Polish lower house of parliament said on Tuesday.

Marek Kuchciński’s comments came after a meeting in Warsaw of top parliamentary officials from the four Visegrad countries: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Kuchciński said: "In most cases we have very similar views. We see the future of the EU as a great, strong community, an international organization which is based on cooperation between nation states."

He added: "We talked about the importance of national parliaments... in cooperation with the institutions of the European Union and all parliaments."

Stanisław Karczewski, Speaker of the Polish Senate, said that the meeting’s participants wanted a "stable Visegrad Group to stabilize the situation in the European Union."

Poland’s voice, he argued, would be "amplified by four EU countries".
