The Polish government has put forward its own candidate, MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, to take on Tusk, a former prime minister of Poland who is running for a second term as the president of the European Council.

A debate and vote to elect a new Council head are expected to be held on Thursday during a summit of leaders of EU member states in Brussels.

However, Waszczykowski has said that a decision does not necessarily need to be taken on Thursday.

“We will do everything to make sure that vote is not held [on Thursday] … We do not have to hurry. We have over two months to refine the procedure,” Waszczykowski told the private TVN24 broadcaster, adding that this topic was among those discussed during a meeting with his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel in Warsaw on Wednesday.

He said that Saryusz-Wolski would make a better head of the European Council than Tusk.

“We stand by [Saryusz-Wolski], no other candidate has been proposed,” Waszczykowski said.

“We are proposing a professional. We do not propose radical changes, we are introducing a better Polish candidate [than Tusk],” he added. (rg/vb)
