The Russian Moskovskij Komsomolets daily said the statement by Gabriel might result in an “impasse” in the Nord Stream 2 project, as Russia will likely not back down from its aim to supply Europe with gas, while completely circumventing Ukraine.

The Nord Stream 2 is set to be completed by the end of 2019, and would run through the bottom of the Baltic sea from Russia straight to Germany. It would be able to transit 55 billion cubic metres of gas a year.

Poland and several other Baltic sea countries, as well as Ukraine strongly oppose the project saying it is a political decision which decreases Europe’s energy safety and increases EU’s dependency on Russian gas.

Last month, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło said that the planned pipeline between Russia and Germany is unacceptable to Warsaw, since it does not pass through Poland and other countries in the region.

Szydło added that Poland, whose economy is coal-based, is “open to talks about an ambitious European climate policy, but taking into account the energy mix best suited to each country.” (tf/rg)
