Warsaw will not hold separate talks on immigrants’ rights in UK: deputy FM

Konrad Szymański told Polish Radio that the issue will be discussed in comprehensive negotiations on Brexit between Britain and the European Union as a whole.

The British parliament on Monday voted to launch Brexit procedures, which are expected to take at least two years.

But the parliament rejected an amendment that would have guaranteed the rights of immigrants from the European Union before the beginning of negotiations on Britain’s exit from the bloc.

Szymański told Polish Radio that Warsaw would not hold separate talks with London on immigrants’ rights because it is "a matter between the EU and Britain."

The issue is up for discussion at an approaching EU summit in Rome.

Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said negotiations must result in equal status for European nationals in Britain and UK citizens in the EU.

It is estimated that more than three million EU citizens live in the UK - almost one million of whom hail from Poland - while about a million Britons live in other EU countries.
