“We were able to confirm the unity of the European Union. This was crucial for Poland,” Szydło said, following the signing of the Rome Declaration at the summit in the Italian capital.

The summit marked 60 years since the founding of the European Economic Community.

“This is the beginning of the path of changes that must be made within the EU,” Szydło added. “Good projects will be the next step.”

The Rome summit was seen as an important step towards EU unity following the UK's decision to leave the bloc.

Attending were the heads of the 27 countries which will remain in the Union, as well as top EU officials, including European Council president Donald Tusk.

“Today in Rome we are renewing the unique alliance of free nations initiated 60 years ago by our great predecessors,” Tusk said.

The Polish PM had said earlier this week that she would not accept the declaration if it did not address issues that are a priority for Poland.

“I can honestly say that the negotiated declaration can be signed because it is safe for Poland and Polish requirements have been fulfilled,” Szydło was quoted as saying on Friday ahead of her trip to Rome. (rg)
