Prime minister Beata Szydło has said that relations between the European Union and Britain should be based on the principles of partnership and reciprocity.

Addressing a press conference in Warsaw, she said this will be the standpoint of Polish government officials in the talks on the conditions of the UK’s divorce from the EU.

Szydło said that it is crucial for Poland to see that the rights of Poles residing in the UK are fully observed. In Warsaw’s view, Britain should also fulfil all her financial obligations stemming from EU membership, she added.

In a phone conversation in late March, Szydło and her UK counterpart Theresa May agreed that Brexit negotiations should minimise any negative effects of Britain’s departure from the EU.

The two leaders spoke after May sent European Council President Donald Tusk a letter triggering Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, the formal start of Britain’s divorce from the bloc.

“Both prime ministers agreed in the course of the conversation that this negotiation process should be efficient and smooth, and should take place in a manner that will minimise the potential negative effects of Brexit,” said Polish government spokesman Rafał Bochenek.
