Georgian politicians aim to hold talks with the Polish president about bilateral relations and about Tbilisi’s aspirations to join the European Union and NATO.

In the capital, Duda will meet Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili as well as Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

The Polish delegation will also lay flowers at a monument to late Polish President Lech Kaczyński.

Lech Kaczyński was one of the first world leaders to travel to Georgia during the 2008 Russo-Georgian crisis.

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in 2015 said that trip “was the moment that saved my country’s independence.”

“In many Georgian families, when people celebrate, a glass to Lech Kaczyński is raised,” Saakashvili said, adding that Lech Kaczyński has become an unofficial national hero in Georgia.

Poland’s ambassador to Tbilisi, Mariusz Maszkiewicz, said that Poles are respected in Georgia, which appreciates Warsaw’s support on the international arena.

On Wednesday, Duda will take part in a ceremony marking the official opening of a boulevard in Tbilisi named after Marshal Józef Piłsudski, one of the architects of Polish independence.

The Polish president will travel to the Black Sea coast, where at the ruins of the Gonio fortress he will be briefed on the work of Polish archaeologists.

Duda's visit to Georgia will last until 31 May.
