The three lured other Poles to Newcastle, northeastern England, promising them well-paid work, but then took away their documents, confiscated a large party of their wages and used violence against them.

Prosecutor Jim Hope said: "The treatment of these vulnerable people was shocking. Every aspect of their lives was controlled.”

He added: "The victims lived and worked alongside colleagues in factories and warehouses and yet were so terrified they were extremely reluctant to tell anyone about their plight."

A court in Leeds, north England, on Wednesday handed out jail terms to the three men, aged 38, 37 and 19, ranging from 12 months to more than three years.
