Polish FM 'deeply saddened' by Kohl death

Polish Foreign Minister has written that he was “deeply saddened” by the news of the death of prominent politician Helmut Kohl who is considered the architect of German reunification.

Kohl died on Friday aged 87.

“We should not forget the role Helmut Kohl played in uniting Germany after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and his impact on the process of unification of all of Europe,” Waszczykowski wrote in a note of condolence published on the foreign ministry's website. “I would like to convey my sincerest condolences to Helmut Kohl’s family and close ones”

In 1966, Kohl was elected as chairman of the Christian Democratic Union in Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1982-1998, he served as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany – he ruled the country for 16 years.

“We appreciate his outstanding contribution to the process of unification of Europe, and his great role in the process of Polish-German reconciliation,” Waszczykowski said. (rg)
