“Please accept sincerest condolences for the catastrophic fire in Pedrógão Grande in central Portugal where many people have lost their lives,” Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said in a note to his Portuguese counterpart Augusto Santos Silva.

“I give my deepest sympathy … to the families and close ones of the victims,” he added.

The fire started on Saturday. Most of the victims perished while trying to escape as flames engulfed their cars and homes.

"It is the greatest tragedy of human lives that we've witnessed in Portugal in years," Prime Minister Antonio Costa said. (vb/pk)
