The summit is being hosted by European Council president and former Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

“This is the 80th European Council in which I have participated as Prime Minister or European Council President. But never before have I had such a strong belief that things are going in a better direction,” Tusk said ahead of the summit.

The meeting of EU leaders will tackle security and defence, economic issues, as well as the ongoing Brexit negotiations.

Ahead of the meeting, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło sat down with her counterparts from the Visegrad Group, made up of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Earlier this week, the UK started discussions with the European Union to exit the bloc following a referendum in 2016. (rg/pk)
