A number of foreign news outlets have corrected references to the Stutthof Nazi German concentration camp, visited recently by British royals in Sztutowo, northern Poland, after describing it as a “Polish" camp.

In coverage of Prince William and his wife Kate’s tour of Poland, US broadcaster CNN, the USA Today paper, and Britain’s Daily Mail and Daily Mirror papers, Italy’s La Presse news agency and Oggi paper, and a number of blogs referred to the camp as Polish.

The Auschwitz Museum took to Twitter to request corrections. The camp was located in the Free City of Gdańsk, and not Poland, when WWII started. The camp was run by Nazi Germans.

CNN, USA Today, the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror corrected their reports, replacing the phrase "Polish" with "German" or "Nazi".

Prince William and Kate visited a museum located at the site of the former camp during their three-day visit to Poland this week.

Some 110,000 people from 28 countries were interred at the camp, and more than half of them died there.

The Auschwitz Museum offers a “Remember” app which highlights phrases including “Polish death camps”, and suggests replacements. (vb/pk)
