Last July, a Russian pilot, who was to take part in aerobatics world championships in Radom, central Poland, flew a light aeroplane too close to Kraków, where Pope Francis and up to three million pilgrims were taking part in World Youth Day events.

The Russian pilot allegedly failed to register his flight plan and had his radio system turned off.

The Russian light plane was intercepted by a pair of Polish F-16 jets and escorted to an airport in Radom where the pilot was detained by police.

According to Moscow-owned news portal Russia Beyond the Headlines, Russia’s aerobatic team’s spokeswoman said the pilot was unaware of the no-fly zone.

The pilot’s trial is expected to start by the end of next month. (vb)
