Individual countries' interests should not overshadow important issues like security, Prime Minister Beata Szydło has said in response to “EU politicians' recent unfair comments about Poland”.

French President Emmanuel Macron recently accused Poland of isolating itself within the European Union while promoting Brussels' labour laws, under which any European Union citizen must be paid the at least the minimum wage of the country in which they are working.

Meanwhile, Brussels and Warsaw have clashed over rule of law procedures, with Poland's foreign minister challenging whether the European Commission had grounds for concern, while a spokeswoman for the commission said Brussels was allowed to act on its doubts.

Szydło said Poland was democratic and “pro-EU”, and that it would defend important European Union values, including the free market. (vb)
