Governance in Poland worsens: World Bank

According to World Governance Indicators (WGI), covering 209 countries, Poland has dropped since last year from 38th to 57th place in “the voice and accountability” indicator, which includes free media and the freedom of speech. The country came ahead of Israel in the ranking, and behind Chile, Japan and Italy.

Poland shifted five places down in an indicator which considered the rule of law. Here, the country took 54th place, between Slovakia (53rd) and Cyprus (55th).

The biggest drop, from No. 53 to 78, was recorded in the section “political stability”, which covers the absence of violence and terrorism.

Poland, however, managed to advance in the ranking in one category, “control of corruption” – from 56th to 50th place – overtaking countries such as Malta, Georgia and Costa Rica.

Overall, the country scored between 0.5 and 1 point in all the categories on a scale from -2.5 to +2.5. (aba)
