Congolese national Guerlin Butungu faces up to 20 years in jail for the late-August attack on the Polish couple.

Twenty-year-old Butungu is suspected of being the leader of a gang which attacked the Polish couple and a transgender Peruvian in Italy over a month ago. He has pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

The other suspected attackers were two brothers of Moroccan descent and a Nigerian national, all aged between 15 and 17. They are in a juvenile detention centre and will be tried by a separate court at a later date.

Butungu faces a procedural hearing on Tuesday.

The case is being closely followed by media in Italy and the Rimini authorities, who claim the attacks damaged the image of the city, which is visited by millions of tourists each year. (vb/pk)
