Broader role for Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade

A joint Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade will see its role broaden under an agreement signed by the three countries’ defence ministers on Thursday.

The agreement, inked in the eastern Polish city of Lublin, enables the brigade to take part in international operations with the unanimous consent of the three nations.
The three ministers -- Poland’s Antoni Macierewicz, Lithuania’s Raimundas Karoblis and Ukraine’s Stepan Poltorak -- on Thursday met to mark two years since the brigade was formed.
Speaking at the ceremony, Poland’s Macierewicz said that the agreement was of historical significance.
"From now on, this brigade will be able to take part in any peace initiative that is necessary when peace is threatened," he said. "I think this is a good sign that will enable our three nations, and above all this brigade, to work for the security of … Central and Eastern Europe."
During the ceremony, the brigade was named after Konstanty Ostrogski, a 15th and 16th century military commander.
Ostrogski commanded joint Polish-Lithuanian forces in a war against Russia that culminated with a victorious Battle of Orsha in 1514. (gs/pk)
