Council of Europe’s resolution “undue interference”: Poland’s Foreign Minister

At a press conference held at the seat of the Polish Social and Cultural Association in London, Waszczykowski said the assembly’s document was aimed at “stigmatising and attacking Poland.”

On Wednesday, PACE, an EU human rights body, adopted a resolution urging Poland and several other countries to fully implement the rule of law.

The assembly called on the Polish authorities to refrain from engaging in conduct that would threaten the rule of law in the country, particularly the independence of courts.

“We wish to remind the world and our allies in Europe that judicial reform remains one of the few that is yet to be pursued over the last 25 years,” Waszczykowski said. “Poles have demanded these reforms and have given us [the ruling Law and Justice party] a strong mandate and a go-ahead to alter this aspect of political and social life.”

“By reforming the judiciary, we import solutions already in place in democratic countries,” the Foreign Minister said. “Thus, what is good for other EU member states should also be good for and accepted in Poland.”

“Therefore, we think that any interference of an external institution is undue, all the more so that this sphere of ... regulation does not fall under European or EU provisions, as the European Commission claims,” the Minister added.

The Polish Foreign Minister and Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz are in London this week for talks with their British counterparts, Boris Johnson and Michael Fallon. (aba/vb)
