Stroganov, an activist from Russia’s Solidarnost movement, was struck on the head in an assault several weeks ago. He fell into a coma and never regained consciousness, according to IAR.

Russian activist and liberal politician Ilya Yashin said that Stroganov was hit with a metal pipe.

Yashin has previously told Poland’s state broadcaster Polish Radio that in Russia opponents of the Kremlin frequently suffered psychological and physical intimidation.

He added: "Dozens of people have been sent to jail, some were intimidated and suspended their activities as oppositionists, while some ended up in a grave, like Boris Nemtsov," the Russian opposition leader and one of President Vladimir Putin’s most vocal critics.

Nemtsov was gunned down outside the Kremlin in 2015.

On Monday, an intruder forced his way into the Moscow offices of Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy and stabbed one of its anchors, Tatyana Felgengauer, in the neck, the broadcaster said.

Over the last few months, unidentified perpetrators have assaulted colleagues of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, beating them, pouring paint over them and damaging premises rented by Navalny, IAR reported.
