Marek Magierowski was speaking in Washington after talks with US officials about issues including the possibility of blocking the contested project, which is vocally opposed by Poland and other countries.

Speaking to reporters after his talks at the US State Department on Wednesday, Magierowski said he hoped the controversial gas pipeline -- which is designed to supply Germany with gas from Russia via the Baltic Sea and to run parallel to the existing Nord Stream pipeline, circumventing Central and Eastern Europe -- could be stopped in its tracks.

Magierowski in Washington met US Assistant Secretary of State Wess Mitchell and Acting Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs Sue Saarnio.

Afterwards, he told reporters that the talks had focused on an act of Congress passed a few months ago on sanctions against Russia. The law enables the US president to torpedo the Nord Stream 2 project, according to Magierowski.

He said that preventing the controversial gas pipeline from being built was a priority for the Polish government. He added that “there is a consensus” between the government and the opposition that the Nord Stream 2 project “is dangerous not only for Poland but the entire region.”

Magierowski said he hoped the US law on sanctions against Russia would be used to “sink the project,” as he put it.

"I think it will be possible to bring about a situation in which this law on sanctions will not remain toothless," he added.

Magierowski was also due to talk about ways of blocking the controversial pipeline project with US Congressmen while in America.
