Marek Kuchciński suggested that Latin America was an attractive business partner for Poland and other Central European countries.

He was speaking during an event billed as Latin America Day in the Polish parliament on Wednesday.

The event -- held by the office of the Polish Sejm, or the lower house, together with the foreign ministry in Warsaw and the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM) -- focused on the role of Latin America in Poland's foreign policy and on prospects for cooperation with countries in the region.

"Latin America is a fascinating region and one that is a bit reminiscent of Central Europe,” Kuchciński said. “It is uniform in terms of values … but at the same time diverse politically.”

He noted that the region is home to many expatriate Poles who have moved there over the years and today “play a significant role” in bilateral ties.

Officials including Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski and his Salvadorean counterpart Hugo Martinez were among those taking part in the Warsaw conference.
