During his visit, which ends on Monday, Waszczykowski will meet the Polish community in the Houston area, according to the Polish foreign ministry.

The Houston consular district is home to around 550,000 Poles and people of Polish origin, roughly 7 percent of the 8-million-strong Polish diaspora in the United States, the Polish foreign ministry said.

It quoted Waszczykowski as saying ahead of his trip -- during a meeting in Warsaw with US ambassador to Poland Paul Jones -- that the opening of a Polish consulate-general in Houston "is a sign of our growing diplomatic presence in the United States."

While in Houston this weekend, Waszczykowski is also expected to hold talks with local government officials and American business leaders, according to the Polish foreign ministry.

In another item on his itinerary, Waszczykowski is due to visit a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Sabine Pass on the border between Texas and Louisiana, from where gas shipments are dispatched to Poland, the Polish foreign ministry said on its website.
