In the speech, the president was set to talk about Poland’s position in the European Union and the country’s new role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, according to a senior aide.

Addressing an audience of foreign ambassadors in Warsaw on Thursday evening, Duda was also expected to outline his international policy objectives in 2018, according to Krzysztof Szczerski, who is the Polish president's chief of staff and his top foreign policy adviser.

Poland was chosen as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in a vote in early June.

The country’s then-Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said at the time that "non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council is an instrument of global influence that provides an opportunity for a political say in resolving international conflicts."

He added that membership raises a country’s profile internationally, which could translate into economic benefits.
