"I hope that together with the Chancellor, we will be able to strengthen our partnership on bilateral and European matters," Morawiecki wrote on Twitter.

Merkel will head a coalition of her conservatives and the Social Democrats (SPD). Some lawmakers from the coalition parties on Wednesday refused to back her as chancellor.

In office since 2005, Merkel has been a towering presence both in Germany and in the EU but her authority was dented by her 2015 decision to open the doors to migrants fleeing the Middle East and Africa.
