Duda on Monday “decided that he would not represent Poland at the opening of the World Cup in Russia,” the president’s chief of staff, Krzysztof Szczerski, told private radio broadcaster RMF FM.

The announcement comes amid an international outcry over a suspected nerve agent attack in southern England earlier this month.

Poland’s foreign minister said on Friday that the authorities in Warsaw were "certain” that Russia was involved in an attempt to poison an ex-spy in the British town of Salisbury on March 4.

Teams from 32 nations will play a total of 64 matches at 12 stadiums in 11 Russian cities during the World Cup, which kicks off on June 14 and ends on July 15.

Poland will play Senegal, Colombia and Japan in the group stage of the tournament, following a draw in Moscow in early December.
