A Russian military Ka-29 helicopter has crashed in the Baltic Sea, killing two pilots, according to reports.

The accident happened near Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, which borders Poland, on Thursday night, according to news agencies.

The incident probably took place during Belarusian-Russian military maneuvers near Brest, close to the Polish-Belarusian border, the niezalezna.pl website reported.

It added, citing the Belarusian defence ministry, that the active phase of the exercises was to have lasted from April 10 to 12.

niezalezna.pl cited the Russian Baltic Fleet as saying that the pilots worked in an aviation plant that manufactures helicopters.

Contact was lost with the helicopter during a night training flight at 11:30pm Moscow time. Weather conditions were normal at the time, according to reports.

Ka-29 helicopters are combat and transport choppers used by the Russian navy.
