Britain thanks Poland for supporting allied strikes on Syria

Britain's foreign secretary has thanked Poland for its support after the US, UK and France carried out punitive air strikes on Syria, the Polish foreign ministry has said.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz discussed developments in Syria and the allied military operations launched in retaliation for the suspected use of chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad's regime.
During their telephone conversation, Czaputowicz said Poland was ready to "consistently support measures to prevent the use of chemical weapons," reiterating a previous statement by Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Duda on Saturday said the strikes "were needed," adding that Poland "of course" backed its NATO allies.
During their conversation on Sunday, Johnson and Czaputowicz agreed more talks were needed on common steps to be taken within the UN Security Council, NATO, the EU, and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, joint US, British and French forces launched a series of air strikes targeting what the Pentagon said were three chemical weapons facilities, including a research and development centre in Damascus and two other sites near Homs.
The air strikes followed a suspected chemical attack on civilians by the Syrian regime in Douma, east of Damascus, on April 7, in which 60 people were killed. (vb/pk)
