A German environmental group wanted the constitutional court to put a stop to the project, saying that the pipeline would result in irreversible losses to the marine environment.

The environmental group has pledged to find another way to block Nord Stream 2.

The group's bid to stop the project was previously rejected by an administrative court in Greifswald, the city in Germany's northeast where the pipeline will make landfall.

The city is located near areas covered by European Union environmental protection rules.

If built, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would supply around 55 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, circumventing Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine.

Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine all oppose the project.

Poland has warned that the pipeline could undermine Europe’s energy security and stability. (vb/pk)
