Poland would also support Ukraine's "ambitious" reforms which aim to bring the country closer to European Union standards, the Ukrainian president's office cited the letter from Duda as saying.

The Polish president said he also supported Ukraine's territorial integrity and internationally recognised borders.

Ukraine announced its independence on August 24, 27 1991.

The referendum to confirm it was held in December later that year.

Poland was the first country to recognise Ukraine's independence. (vb)
