Meanwhile, 28 percent of those taking part would vote against Ukraine becoming a member of the Western military alliance, Poland’s rp.pl website has reported, citing the poll, which it said was conducted in Ukraine last month.

Forty-two percent of those surveyed said NATO membership would be the best guarantee of security for their country, rp.pl reported.

The number of Ukrainians who believe that joining NATO would be a better security option than any other has increased by more than threefold since 2012, rp.pl said, quoting Ukrainian political analyst Ruslan Kermach.

Sixty-three percent of Ukrainians would vote in a referendum on their country joining NATO, according to the survey, which was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Kiev International Institute of Sociology from August 16 to 28 on a sample of 2,041 respondents aged 18 or over in all regions of Ukraine, except the occupied territories of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk, rp.pl reported.

The United States wants to see Ukraine become a member of NATO in the future, the US permanent representative to NATO, Kay Bailey Hutchison, said in April, according to reports.

Hutchison said at the time that, before joining the alliance, Ukraine should carry out reforms to bring the country closer to NATO member state standards, Poland’s niezalezna.pl website reported.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said last month that Poland supported Ukrainian ties with the European Union and NATO.
