A Brexit deal is close but the European Union needs to compromise, a German paper has quoted the British prime minister as saying, while Poles in the UK remain anxious as the deadline for the UK’s divorce from the bloc draws nearer.

According to a report in the Wednesday edition of Die Welt, the UK’s Theresa May said that, for a successful end to negotiations, the European Union will need to change its position, just as the UK did previously.

Both sides need to demonstrate good will in order to avoid Britain’s messy departure from the union, which could cause serious economic upset, May reportedly said.

May is expected on Wednesday to present European Union leaders with the so-called Chequers proposal she agreed with her Cabinet in July, which suggests close post-Brexit customs ties between London and Brussels and free movement of goods.

Britain started the process of leaving the European Union last year, with a final divorce date set for March 2019.

But without a final plan for the breakup, many of the one million Poles and other European Union citizens living in the UK, and many British nationals on mainland Europe, feel uncertain about the future, as do some EU companies working directly or indirectly with British-based firms.

A key point of contention between London and Brussels is the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which will become the post-Brexit land border between the UK and the European Union. (vb/pk)
