Poland wants a breakthrough in talks between the European Union and Britain that will give certainty to Polish people and businesses, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said.

The Polish prime minister was speaking in Salzburg, Austria, where leaders of European Union countries met for informal talks on Wednesday and Thursday.

Morawiecki said the impasse in divorce talks between the UK and the bloc could mean difficult scenarios in the future.

"We want to ensure predictability for our people and businesses so we want to somehow ease, mitigate the sometimes very tense and difficult negotiations for Britain's exit from the European Union because we really want to break the impasse" between them, Morawiecki added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday urged the bloc to make compromises in order to arrive at a deal.

Britain started the process of leaving the European Union last year, with a final divorce date set for March 2019.

But without a final plan for the breakup, many of the one million Poles and other European Union citizens living in the UK, and many British nationals on mainland Europe, feel uncertain about the future, as do some EU companies working directly or indirectly with British-based firms.
A key point of contention between London and Brussels is the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which will become the post-Brexit land border between the UK and the European Union
