The Warsaw meeting of the Western defence alliance’s Military Committee, its highest military authority, was expected to focus on decisions made by NATO leaders at their recent summit in Brussels, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Heads of state and government from the 29 NATO countries meeting in Brussels in July approved the "Four 30s" plan to have 30 troop battalions, 30 aircraft squadrons and 30 warships ready to deploy within 30 days by 2020 to combat any threats, amid fears of an aggressive Russia, according to reports.

Poland's Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak told Polish Radio on Thursday that the Warsaw conference was expected to address security in Eastern Europe.

Relations between the defence alliance and the European Union were another topic on the agenda for NATO military commanders in Warsaw, according to IAR.

The NATO Military Committee meets twice a year at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels, and it also meets in an allied member country once a year.

Poland joined NATO in 1999.
