The Polish president and his wife were scheduled to have a private audience with the pope on Monday morning, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Duda was expected to discuss domestic affairs as well as global challenges with the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, according to Krzysztof Szczerski, a senior aide to the Polish head of state.

President Duda’s trip to the Holy See coincided with the 40th anniversary of the election of Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyła as Pope John Paul II, the IAR news agency reported.

John Paul II, born Karol Wojtyła in the southern Polish town of Wadowice on May 18, 1920, served as pope from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005. He was declared a saint in 2014.

Meanwhile, President Duda’s schedule in Rome included a speech at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to coincide with World Food Day on Tuesday, according to Szczerski.
