The establishment of a missile defence installation in Poland and cooperation by the Polish and American defence industries was also discussed at the meeting on Monday, the Polish foreign ministry said on its website.

The meeting was hosted by Bartosz Cichocki, Polish Under Secretary for Security. The American delegation was headed by Andrea L. Thompson, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security in the US State Department.

Even though the Polish-American alliance "has never been so close, we are looking at possibilities of strengthening it for the benefit of both our countries and the democratic community,” said Cichocki, as cited by the Polish foreign ministry.

Warsaw is pressing for a new permanent US army base dubbed “Fort Trump” to be set up in Poland amid fears of Russian aggression.

The Polish section of a US missile defence shield over Europe is being built by the Americans at Redzikowo in the north of the country.
