Czaputowicz was among government ministers from NATO countries who on Tuesday in Brussels discussed escalated tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

Tensions flared after Russia fired on and captured three Ukrainian navy ships in the Sea of Azov near the annexed Crimea peninsula last month.

“Poland’s top diplomat … noted that the situation in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov shows that Russian actions are a fundamental source of [the] region’s instability,” the foreign ministry in Warsaw said on its website.

It quoted Czaputowicz as saying: “Russia continues [a] creeping annexation of Ukrainian territory.”

Speaking to journalists, Czaputowicz also “expressed his full understanding for the United States’ plans to suspend its participation in the INF Treaty,” the Polish foreign ministry said, referring to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, an arms control agreement.

It cited Czaputowicz as saying: “Russia does not abide by the treaty, while the United States always has done so. An agreement where only one of the parties respects its provisions does not make any sense.”
