“I was saddened to hear about the Sunda Strait tsunami, which left many dead and hundreds of injured in its wake,” Duda said in a message of condolence to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The Polish head of state added: “On behalf of the Polish people and on my own behalf, I would like to express my deepest sympathy to all the victims and their families.”

The message was posted on the president’s website on Sunday.

At least 222 people were reported killed and more than 800 others injured after the deadly wave struck the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra late on Saturday.

The tsunami followed an underwater landslide believed to have been caused by the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano, the Reuters news agency reported, citing officials.

The death toll from the disaster was feared to rise as rescuers combed through rubble for survivors.
