The Dar Młodzieży was expected to pull in at the resort town on Mexico's Pacific coast at around 5pm Polish time.

Mexican officials were to be invited aboard, while a meeting was planned to allow young Poles to get to know their Mexican counterparts, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The Polish ship will next head to Panama for the Roman Catholic Church's World Youth Day, the culmination of its voyage around the world.

The Dar Młodzieży left the Polish Baltic city of Gdynia in May, with plans to call in at over 20 ports during its 10-month Independence Cruise.

Poland last year marked the centenary of regaining its independence after more than 120 years of foreign rule.
