Adamowicz, 53, was attacked and stabbed several times by a 27-year-old knife-wielding man during a high-profile annual charity drive on Sunday evening. He died the next day in hospital from severe wounds despite efforts by doctors to save him.

Hello! magazine noted that Adamowicz, who was mayor of Gdańsk for more than 20 years, welcomed Britain’s Prince William and Kate during their visit to the city in the summer of 2017.

Adamowicz accompanied the royals on their tour of the city’s European Solidarity Centre and the Shakespearean Theatre. He also joined them for a street party in the city’s central market square.

Hello! magazine reports that Adamowicz is survived by his wife Magdalena, who was in London at the time of the attack and was flown home on board a Polish government plane, and by their two daughters Antonina and Teresa.
