Lawmakers on Tuesday evening voted against the deal by 432 votes to 202 in a crushing defeat for May.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour party, motioned for a vote of no confidence in the conservative government, which could trigger a general election.

Immigrants now face the prospect of Britain leaving the European Union without legal guarantees for citizens of other countries living in the UK, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

Some 985,000 Poles lived in Britain in June last year, down from 1.02 million in December 2017, according to Britain’s Office for National Statistics.

Britain’s final divorce date is set for March 29.

May last month told Poles living in her country that they were welcome and would be able to stay in the UK after Brexit.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at the time spoke in favour of continued close ties with London post-Brexit, saying that Britain was "leaving the European Union, not Europe."

Morawiecki and May met in London in December along with senior members of their Cabinets as part of their countries’ third annual “intergovernmental consultations.”
